PRACTICES

It requires a lot of energy to extract Reb M from stevia leaf as it is present in very tiny amount. Using fermentation or bioconversion to produce Reb M significantly reduces its environmental footprint compared to direct extraction from stevia leaves. These processes ensure consistent quality and resource efficiency.

However, because bioconverted Reb M is made from stevia leaf, it is the only type that directly provides livelihood to stevia farmers. Also, because of the manufacturing process, there is no transgenic material left over, enabling claims around non GMO and plant based which are attractive to many consumers and food manufacturers.
